Stand in Solidarity with Michigan Workers

President Obama put it best: So-called right-to-work laws are not about boosting the economy, but about crippling the political opposition. He noted that they are not about freedom, but about weakening workers’ ability to organize for better pay. As the president said, unions have long played a critical role in providing a path to the middle class. Investing in a trained, well-represented workforce is the way to produce a broadly shared prosperity—rather than a “race to the bottom”—that is better for the country as a whole.

We know unions build a strong working middle class. In Michigan, workers and their unions saved the auto industry, and they are growing our state’s economy—for union members and nonunion members alike. By creating jobs, we reduce income inequality. Right-to-work laws drive down wages for all workers by an average of $1,500 a year—whether they are in a union or not.

This legislation is another example of a national attack on the American dream and democracy funded by power-hungry CEOs and corporate interests. The governor is a puppet of wealthy, out-of-state interests. This is part of a systematic, coordinated attack by Dick DeVos and the Mackinac Center, and outsiders like the Koch brothers and the American Legislative Exchange Council, to silence the middle class so it no longer has the power to challenge the 1 percent.

Sign our petition urging Gov. Snyder to reconsider his position and to not sign this devastating legislation into law. By doing so, you will show your solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Michigan and throughout the nation.
